The very name indicates that the British government and the Irish nationalist leaders were now on an equal footing. With this treaty the entire island of ireland became a self-governing dominion ( a bit like Canada) .Still it divided the island into Northern Ireland and the irish Free State. Northern Ireland first belonged to the Self-governing Dominion with an option to return later to the United Kingdom which it did after only 2 days |

THE IRISH CIVIL WAR |
The ANGLO IRISH TREATY caused a split within the Republicans as some members wanted to carry on fighting to obtain independence for the WHOLE OF THE ISLAND .This triggered a one year civil war within the republican side resulting in a victory for the PRO TREATY supporters. The division was established. |

STEP 4 STILL NOT ALL REPUBLICANS WERE SATISFIED
IMAGINE A CONFRONTATION BETWEEN PRO AND AGAINST TREATY FORCES WITHIN THE INDEPENDENT FORCES.
Among the treaty's main clauses were that:[3][4]
- Crown forces would withdraw from most of Ireland.
- Ireland was to become a self-governing dominion of the British Empire, a status shared by Australia, Canada, Newfoundland, New Zealand and the Union of South Africa.
- As with the other dominions, the King would be the Head of State of the Irish Free State (Saorstát Éireann) and would be represented by a Governor General (See Representative of the Crown).
- Members of the new free state's parliament would be required to take an Oath of Allegiance to the Irish Free State. A secondary part of the oath was to "be faithful to His Majesty King George V, His heirs and successors by law, in virtue of the common citizenship".
- Northern Ireland (which had been created earlier by the Government of Ireland Act) would have the option of withdrawing from the Irish Free State within one month of the Treaty coming into effect.
- If Northern Ireland chose to withdraw, a Boundary Commission would be constituted to draw the boundary between the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland.
- Britain, for its own security, would continue to control a limited number of ports, known as the Treaty Ports, for the Royal Navy.
- The Irish Free State would assume responsibility for a proportionate part of the United Kingdom's debt, as it stood on the date of signature.
- The treaty would have superior status in Irish law, i.e., in the event of a conflict between it and the new 1922 Constitution of the Irish Free State, the treaty would take precedence.
DEBATE
I RECKON we need our own police and military forces to defend ourselves and that is what we would gain from this treaty
we would acquire some form of democracy away from this british dictatorship
Still our powers will be limited. But on the long run we could become a republicif we oppose this treaty we will have to embark on a new independence war and we do not have the means to fight the british back again
with this treaty we have at last the opportunity to be self governed even though we have lost a part of the isle.
we must bear in mind that this treaty will grant us peace at last free from the british .
Albeit the loss of a part of the island the majority of the land will be free with its own irish government.
I know it might imply some massive exodus from the Catholics living in the north but they will still find refuge in the southern republic .
At last we will become a country on its own despite the loss of some territory.
I wish we could have achieved full independence but with the british and protestant presence that was not achievable yet.
