CORRECTION

A miracle

Dunkirk was dubbed ( to dub = surnommer) the miracle of Dunkirk because they did not expect to save so many men stranded on  the beaches

To be rescued

338,226 men were rescued from the beaches where they were waiting for a vessel to come and bring them back to Great Britain

A line of fortification

The Allies were relying (to rely =compter sur) a line of Fortification called the Maginot line to stop the Germans and prevent them from invading France and Belgium. But A flaw ( une faille) in the protection meant that the Germans went through the Ardennes Forest and thus manage to surround the allied forces.

To deter (décourager)a German invasion

The Maginot Line was supposed to deter a German invasion

The Netherlands

The Netherlands surrendered allowing the Germans to conquere even more territories and push the allied forces back towards the beaches of Northern France

Belgium

belgium was first a neutral country but it was soon invaded by the German army and had to elaving the French and the BEF (British Expeditionary Forces) on their own.

To be neutral

Belgium had  decided to remain neutral in the conflict.

The RAF (Royal Air Force) the British aviation

The planes from the RAF tried to defend the soldiers on the ground from the air raid of the Luftwaffe

A flotilla = a group of small ships

Churchill asked all British boats from all shapes and sizes to come to the rescue of the British forces stranded in Dunkirk.Thousands gathered and headed towards ( to head towards = se diriger vers) Dunkirk.

A flaw ( une faille)

There was a flaw in the defense system of the Allied forces: the Ardennes Forest

impenetrable

The Ardennes Forest was considered impenetrable.

To capture

Despite the thousands saved, Thousands of French and British soldiers were captured by the British after the end of operation Dynamo on the fourth of June 1940.

To surrender

Churchill did not want to see the whole British army surrender after only 1 year into the  war.

Operation dynamo

Operation dynamo was organised by Churchill and admiral ramsey. It was organised and supervised from Dover Castle. Its purpose was to send as many war vessels to go and rescue the British soldiers who were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk surrounded by the German army.

To evacuate

The allied needed to evacuate their troops from Dunkirk to continue the war.

A port

Dunkirk is a French port in Northern France

To embark on

The soldiers were trying to embark on the vessels sent to bring them back home.

Shallow (peu profond)

The waters were too shallow so they could not save many soldiers because the vessels could not reach the shores and the soldiers had to swim to the ships instead or had to be tranferred by means ( by means of = thanks to) smaller ships , a process which took too long.

The luftwaffe

The Luftwaffe was pounding/bombarding the beach as a wall of defense was surrounding the town preventing the german army from progressing and capturing the soldiers on the ground.

Churchill

Churchill was the prime minister and the minister of defense and so he was in charge of the operations

To be surrounded

The BEF and the French were surrounded by the german panzer divisions.

cloudy

When the weather was cloudy over Dunkirk, that stopped the planes from flying and thus the soldiers could relax as no bombs could be dropped on that day.It happened twice during operation Dynamo.

The mole (jetée à l’entrée d’un port )

An engineer thought of embarking the soldiers from the mole and not from the beaches thus quickening the process and saving more lives.

To sink

Some war vessels and well as civilian ones were sunk

To be stranded (etre bloqué)

the soldiers were stranded on the beaches

Civilian boats

Thousands of civilian boats departed from Ramsgate , A British port close to Dover to answer Churchill's call and come to the rescue of the soldiers.

The little ship of dunkirk

These ships are called the little ships of Dunkirk and the heroic gesture of their owners is still celebrated as major event during the war as it helped saved the british army and thus allowed the war to go on.So without those ships the war might have ended very differently.

The allied forces

The allied forces were alomost decimated at Dunkirk

The Northern coast of France

Dunkirk is situated on the Northern coast of France.
