WORK

PROJCT 2025

A STUDY OF 3 DOCUMENTS

Mission: YOU ARE THE CEO OF YOUR COMPANY. DISCUSS WITH YOUR STAFF THE BEST  MODE OF WORK YOU WILL ADOPT FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN YOUR COMPANY TO GUARANTEE GOOD / AGREEABLE / PLEASANT WORKING CONDITIONS ?

Every single day I would organize a team breakfast

If I had my own company I would be lenient with people who are never on time

If I want to guarantee the best working conditions I would put a tv screen in the break room

If I had a company I would hire a chef for the cafeteria

PARTNER A TEXT 1 :THE FOUR DAY WEEK

A company in New Zealand that tested four-day work weeks says the experiment was so successful that it wants to make it permanent.

Perpetual Guardian, which helps customers manage their wills and estates, released the results of its two-month trial this week. The company said its employees all reported greater productivity, better work-life balance and lower stress levels from working one less day a week.

The employees — more than 240 of them — were still paid for five days a week during the experiment, which ran from the beginning of March to the end of April. The trial was conducted by outside researchers.

In a survey taken late last year, only 54% of respondents said they felt able to manage their work-life balance. After the trial, that number jumped to 78%.

Staff stress levels also decreased by around 7%, while metrics used to measure team engagement rose around 20% on average.

Barnes, the CEO of Perpetual Guardian  said employees became more productive, spending less time on social media or non-work activity. One employee even told the CEO that he stopped looking at emails from his wife about an ongoing apartment search during work hours.

"Why am I not paying based on output?" Barnes said. "Why am I paying for days in the office?"

Employees offered other ideas on measuring productivity, like having small flags to place on their desks when they didn't want to be disturbed.

Barnes has recommended to his company's board that a four-day work week be made permanent, and says it could serve as an example for other firms around the world.

"What happens is you get a motivated, energized, stimulated, loyal work force," he said. "I have ended up with statistics that indicate my staff are fiercely proud of the company they work for because it gives a damn."

VOCABULARY TO HELP YOU :

an experiment (une experience)

a balance ( équilibre)

a trial ( un essai)

QUESTIONS : include your answers in your summary :

·         what were the consequences of the experiment? What was the impact on the staff and their motivation?

·         what did the experiment consist in ?

·         What did the CEo use to pay for? What should he pay for instead? ( cf line in bold letters)

AS A CONSEQUENCE THE PRODUCTIVITY OF THE EMPLOYEES WAS HIGHER AND THEY EXPERIENCE LOWER STRESS LEVEL

THE WORKERS WORKED ONLY 4 DAY A WEEK WITH THE FRIDAY OFF

THE CEO WISHED TO IMPLEMENT THIS TYPE OF WORKING WEEK BECAUSE HE INSISTED ON THE FACT THAT HE WAS PAYING FOR THE WORKERS' OUTPUT AND NOT FOR THE TIME SPENT IN THE OFFICE.SO HE THOUGHT THE WORKERS WERE MORE PRODUCTIVE

PARTNER B TELEWORKING

Teleworking. Teleworking, sometimes called telecommuting, means working from home using modern technology to keep in touch with your business. Jobs can be relocated to places where it is attractive, more convenient or cheaper to live. Technology required for teleworking. You need a computer with internet access and an email account. Some teleworkers may also use a fax machine, a mobile phone, video conferencing equipment. What are the advantages for the employer? The office running costs and overhead, rates, electricity, heating, can be reduced, which, in turn, may reduce the need for office space.

Travel-related problems may be reduced, and staff being unable to get into work due to railroad delays. It may tempt better staff to come and work for the company. Disadvantage for the employer. The employer needs to be able to trust their staff. And to be prepared to have less direct control over them. The advantages for the employee. They work in a comfortable environment, their home. No commute and no travel costs.

Work around their family's needs. Disadvantages for the employee. Less human interaction. Fewer opportunities to meet people, share ideas. More difficult to work as part of a team, especially if they're all office-based. Greater temptation to spend time on non-work related activities and difficult to separate personal life from work.

QUESTIONS : include your answers in your summary :

  • Give a definition of teleworking
  • State the pros and cons for the employers and the employees

TELEWORKING CONSISTS IN WORKING FROM HOME it is also called remote working

THE BENEFITS FOR THE COMPANY IS THAT THEIR EXPENSES ARE LOWER IN TERM OF ELECTRICITY AND HEATING AS WELL AS OFFICE SPACE.

As for the employees they do not need to COMMUTE ( faire la navette) so they save on time and money. Moreover they work in a cosy = comfortable environment as they work from their own home.

Still the drawback is that they may be tempted to spend time on other things than purely their work.Besides it might be tricky for them to separate their private and work life.

PARTNER C HYBRID WORK

Working from home some of the time, or hybrid working, will become "the norm" for many companies after the pandemic, says global workspace provider IWG.

Firms will be looking to save money and be more environment-friendly by using less office space, said IWG chief executive Mark Dixon.

IWG said 2020 had been a "challenging" year as fewer firms rented its offices.

But it said it was ready to take advantage of "accelerating demand" for hybrid working.

"Something's happening and it is a change to the way that companies and people work," Mr Dixon told the BBC's Today programme.

Paul Hubble used to have to leave his home in Eastbourne, East Sussex, at 06:10 to get to his desk at Barclays' London headquarters in Canary Wharf by 09:00 - a morning commute of two-and-a-half hours.

He had to leave just before 17:00 if he wanted to make it home for 19:30.

But since home-working became the norm for Barclays employees, Paul says he can get more done.

"I now have more time for myself, but also can be more productive in that I can start work early and finish work later," he told the BBC. Plus he saves £6,000 a year on his rail season ticket.

It also means he can make time for a mid-afternoon dog walk, which he says is a "great way of recharging the batteries".

Mr Dixon said companies were keen to shed some of their office space and use third-party facilities instead, often closer to where staff actually live.

"It works for companies, because it's a lot cheaper," he said. "It's also much, much better for the environment," he added, as it enabled workers to cut back on commuting.
