WHAT HAPPENED ? Militarists Take Control Of Japan

As the Great Depression hit the Japanese in the 1929, the Japanese blamed the government. Therefore, they restored military control of the governement  and  assigned Emperor Hirohito as the puppet emperor.

WHAT DID IT MATTER ?

As the government was controlled by the military it explains why they were keen to wage war in 1939.

WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT ?

The Germans believed Hitler was the only one strong enough to restore Germany as a super power and thus obviously it led to the second world war

WHY DOES IT MATTER ?

In 1935, Hitler violates the Treaty of Versailles by reintroducing the draft (la conscription)and rearming Germany..

WHAT HAPPENED ?     The Spanish Civil War

WHY DOES IT MATTER ?The Spanish Civil War  took place from 1936 to 1939.  IT IS BASICALLY a pre war as it opposed republicans defending democracy against Nationalists backed by Germany and the fascist movements

WHAT HAPPENED ? Munich Conference is Held

WHAT DOES IT MATTER ?

The Munich Agreement was a settlement permitting Nazi Germany's annexation of portions of Czechoslovakia along the country's borders mainly inhabited by German speakers. Today, it is widely regarded as a failed act of appeasement toward Germany. The agreement was signed by Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy.

the state of Czechoslovakia was not invited to the conference.

After the summit, the British prime minister Chamberlain returned to the UK where he declared that the Munich agreement meant "peace for our time"

WHAT HAPPENED ? the  Pact of Steel is Signed

WHY DOES IT MATTER ?

The Pact of Steel  known formally as the Pact of Friendship and Alliance between Germany and Italy IS SIGNED .

the pact was signed without Japan and became an agreement between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany.

Although intended to last 10 years, it was effectively cancelled in 1943 with the removal of Italy's fascist government.

 WHAT HAPPENED ? The Non-Aggression Pact is Signed

WHY DOES IT MATTER ?

the German–Soviet Non-aggression Pact was a neutrality pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union

The pact delineated the spheres of interest between the two powers .It remained in force for nearly two years, until the German government of Adolf Hitler ended the pact by launching an attack on the Soviet positions on 22 June 1941.

This explains why the soviets did not help the allies in 1939 and why they were crucial in the final victory after 1941.

WHAT HAPPENED ? Germany Invades Poland

WHY DOES IT MATTER ?

The Invasion of Poland was a joint invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, marked the beginning of World War II. The campaign ended on 6 October with Germany and the Soviet Union dividing and annexing the whole of Poland.

WHAT HAPPENED ? Declaration of War on Germany

WHY DOES IT MATTER ?Because of their alliance ith Poland britain and France had to declare a war against Germany as the latter had invaded Poland.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

DATE JUNE 22 1940  

WHAT HAPPENED ? The Fall of France /France surrender or the armistice

WHY DOES IT MATTER ? From september 1939  to May  nothing much happened.It is called the Phoney war .But then in 6 weeks The germans defeated the allies.

DATE From the 27 th of May  to the 4 th of june

WHAT HAPPENED ?

the Allied forces of British, French and Belgian troops were trapped by the invading German army oin the area around Dunkirk. Then started a desperate and near-miraculous opeartion to rescue  the troops and bring the English soldiers back to the UK

.

 WHY DOES IT MATTER ? it saved the Allied cause in Europe from total collapse as it ensured that the British were still able to combat Hitler.

DATE from July 1940 to June 1941

WHAT HAPPENED ? The Battle of Britain was a military campaign of the Second World War when the Royal Air Force (RAF) defended the United Kingdom (UK) against the German Air Force (Luftwaffe

 WHY DOES IT MATTER ?It was the first British victory against the Germans who were unable to invade the UK and thus was a turning point in the war..

The Battle of Britain takes its name from a speech by Winston Churchill on 18 June: "What General Weygand has called The Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin."
