Strategies for narrowing the gender pay gap

1.    SOLUTION 1  :Raise the minimum wage

WHY ?

-          women are essentially in low- paying jobs

CONSEQUENCE :

- lift women out of poverty

- help all  low-wage workers .

2. SOLUTION 2 :Increase pay transparency

WHY ?

-          know what other employees are earning

-          be able to compare and defend your interests

CONSEQUENCE

-          narrow = reduce the gender pay gap by 30 percent

-          favour open conversation and dialogue within the company

-          help the government give a penalty to the companies for wage discrimination

 

3.SOLUTION 3 : Unionize workplaces

Tool box : a union ( un syndicat)

 

WHY ?

-defend the rights of the workers

-defend your rights

-suggest to the government new policies

-help you in case of procedures for discrimination

 

CONSEQUENCE

-          implement fairer laws ( fair = juste)

-          secure = obtain more benefits  for women and workers in general

 

4.SOLUTION 4  Implement fair scheduling practices

Toolbox : schedule ( emploi du temps/ horaire)

WHY ?

-unpredictable schedule make it difficult to arrange childcare

-reduce unpredictable schdules

CONSEQUENCE

-          organise child care better

-          be able to do extra hours if possible

-          earn more

-          organise their time better

-          organise  childcare with the fathers

-          provide a more accomodating / easier environment for working parents

5.SOLUTION 5 IMPROVE MATERNITY LEAVE

WHY ?

-          allow women and men to look after the kids

-          women may be forced to leave their job

CONSEQUENCE

-          allow women to remain in the workforce

-          help prevent people from earning less

-          create more equal opportunity for women and men

6. SOLUTION 6 IMPROVING CHILD CARE

WHY ?

-          child care is more and more expansive

-          women’s pay is not high enough to cover child care cost

-          women leave the workforce to care for their children

CONSEQUENCE

-allow women to remain at work

- improve the financial situation of the whole family
