STEP 2 SO HERE ARE THE SPEECHES .

THE RECORDINGS HAVE BEEN LOST OF SOME PARTS OF THE SPEECHES SO YOU WILL HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF.

1.CHURCHILL SPEECH TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS ON THE LIBERATION OF France

I have also to announce to the House that during the night and the early hours of this morning the first of the series of landings in force upon the European Continent has taken place.

In this case the liberating assault fell upon the coast of France. An immense armada of upwards of 4,000 ships, together with several thousand smaller craft, crossed the Channel.

Massed airborne landings have been successfully effected behind the enemy lines, and landings on the beaches are proceeding at various points at the present time. The fire of the shore batteries has been largely quelled. The obstacles that were constructed in the sea have not proved so difficult as was apprehended…

 I cannot, of course, commit myself to any particular details. Reports are coming in in rapid succession. So far the Commanders who are engaged report that everything is proceeding according to plan.

And what a plan! This vast operation is undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult that has ever taken place. It involves tides, wind, waves, visibility, both from the air and the sea standpoint, and the combined employment of land, air and sea forces in the highest degree of intimacy and in contact with conditions which could not and cannot be fully foreseen.

There are already hopes that actual tactical surprise has been attained, and we hope to furnish the enemy with a succession of surprises during the course of the fighting. The battle that has now begun will grow constantly in scale and in intensity for many weeks to come, and I shall not attempt to speculate upon its course.

 This I may say, however. Complete unity prevails throughout the Allied Armies. There is a brotherhood in arms between us and our friends of the United States. There is complete confidence in the supreme commander, General Eisenhower, and his lieutenants, and also in the commander of the Expeditionary Force, General Montgomery.

The ardour and spirit of the troops, as I saw myself, embarking in these last few days was splendid to witness. Nothing that equipment, science or forethought could do has been neglected, and the whole process of opening this great new front will be pursued with the utmost resolution both by the commanders and by the United States and British Governments whom they serve

 that event heavy fighting will soon begin and will continue without end, as we can push troops in and he can bring other troops up. It is, therefore, a most serious time that we enter upon. Thank God, we enter upon it with our great Allies all in good heart and all in good friendship.

HERE ARE MY REMARKS FOR THE BAC

MY REMARKS ON BOTH SPEECHES 

both speeches are imbued in a strong sense of religious duty.

President Roosevelt is basically a prayer while Eisenhower's speech ends up with an address to the " almighty god"

This direct address to the divine is meant of course to confirm the rightousness of the " Great Crusade" that the allies are going to embark upon;

Thei cause is just  so God is on their side as they are about to fight the forces of Evil that the Nazis embody.

Still the two speeches's authors have a different purpose in mind which results from the public they are addressing.

Roosevelt is broadcasting for a domestic audience and thus is main role is to hammer home ( marteler) that theirs is a necessary task.Rememeber that the isolationist feelings are still running high in the country and thus the president has to kill such sentiments in the bud by reminding every single americans of the significance of the operation.

Their quest is not prompted by " the lust of conquest" as Hitler himself indulged in but " a fight to liberate".Indeed we have to highlight that the Americans were not seeking to widen their territory as they did not intend to bring colonies in the American fold.

Still they meant to put the various liberated territories under a protectorate but that plan was queled by the resistance of Genral De Gaulle who fiercely opposed any external control in France.

let me add that President Roosevelt had another goal in mind blatantly visible in such sentence as " to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and material support of our armed forces ".

His aim was to encourage the Homefront to full participate in the war effort via finacial donations as well as in factories supplying the army with the necessary material.

Eisenhower on the other hand was addressing another public the soldiers themselves on the brink of the armed conflict.

For them he meant to remind them of the moral validity of their action freeing " the oppressed people "from the "nazi tyranny".

To do so he attempted to boost the confidence of the army by highlighting the fact that although the Germans were indeed a mighty military force, they had faced recent defeats and had seen their "strength " "seriuously reduced " thanks to a forceful campaign of air bombardments.

Victory was achievable  as his last words were meant to convey " i have full confidence " " we will accept nothing less than full victory " which underscores  in no uncertain words that the allies  had opted  to never resort to negotiations and compromise as had been done in the past, a policy which had led to these disastrous circumstances.

SO WRITE THE NOTE OF DEFEAT EISENHOWER HAD PREPARED IN CASE OF FAILURE

 

HERE IS THE ACTUAL NOTE HE WROTE

“Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that Bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.”
