APPLICATION

The title of the text that we are going to study is …………………….

It comes from - a website (THE BBC  Dot com )

It was published ON … THE ELEVENTH OF NOVEMBER

The article was written by …AN ANONYMOUS AUTHOR

The title sums up ( to sum up = résumer) the content of the article

A careful reading of the text reveals that it deals with NEW TECHNOLOGIES

To study this text i will  first

-SUM UP THE FACTS

2) LIST THE PROS AND CONS PRESENTED IN THE TEXT

- AND THEN CONCLUDE WITH MY OPINION ON THE TOPIC

So let’s start

SUM UP THE FACTS

The text  focuses on the delivery company which has become an household name : Amazon.

This e commerce giant has decided to boost its use of robots in its line of production .

Although the firm is not ready to divulge the amount of cash it had to devote ( consacrer) to that operation , it is keen to stress that human jobs will still be needed in the company.

Indeed  the workforce is under threat and fear losing their job.But the corporations highlights that it has created a whole range of new jobs  which will trigger extra recruitment / hiring.

On the flip side the text underlines that The automation process includes giant robotic arm as well as drones .The lattest are  used in the delivery operations and are due to appear in the US in a short while.

Still the author points out that some companies and in particular chinese ones  have a head start in this race towards automation and that some warehouses and manufacturing centers are devoid of human presence.

We might wonder why companies are raring ( to rare  to = être impatient de ) to automate their factory in view of the huge sums involved.

It might be partly explained by the struggle = difficulty to find workers willing to work in the manufacturing industry.

THE PROS AND CONS : extract from the blog

It is a positive thing FOR THE INDUSTRY BECAUSE ON THE LONG RUN IT is MORE ECONOMICal = cheaper

Still ROBOTS  CAN DO HUMAN CHORES

On the other hand ROBOTS CAN DO MISTAKES

On the flip side WE CAN’T RELY ON ROBOTS BECAUSE THEY CAN BECOME OUR MASTERS and take the upper hand

Nevertheless ( néanmoins)  ROBOTS INCREASE THE PRODUCTIVITY AND WORK FASTER AND THEY DO NOT BREAK down

Moreover ( de plus ) ROBOTS CAN EVOLVE QUICKLY

BUT ACCORDING TO THE STUDY  JOBS WILL BE REDUNDANT = useless

: COMPUTERIZED which is risky = harmful = detrimental for us

Yet ( pourtant) ROBOTS TAKE CARE of  REPETITIVE TASKS

SINCE WE ARE DISCOVERING NEW FIELDS =domains  THEY CAN BE USEFUL

On the other hand THEY COULD BE HACKED

Nonetheless ( néanmoins) THEY COULD BE A GREAT HELP FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE = old people

And yet ( et pourtant = have you thought about the fact that THEY COULD REBEL AGAINST US IN THE END

MY ADDICTION

TOPIC 3 AUTOMATION : the pros and cons

The pros

  1. It increases productivity
  2. It improves accuracy and the quality of the product
  3. It saves costs for the company on labour and workers’ benefits and management
  4. It increases safety in certain jobs
  5. It improves flexibility as you can scale it back / reduce the number of machine working on periods of crisis

The cons

  1. It creates unemployment
  2. It is expensive to implement
  3. It can be dirupted by technical glitches/ problems
  4. It reduces human interactions and thus clients can resent the experience

OPINION

Are you afraid of robots ? cf lesson

CONCLUSION

IN CONCLUSION : to sum up / IN A NUTSHELL we might say that robots are bound to be part of our future and we had better try to co exist to survive.

Moreover we might wonder if AI will not pose the same threat
