CORRECTION A STARRY NIGHT BY VAN GOGH
The document that we are about to peruse is entitled a starry night and at first glance this title is quite appropriate.
Indeed the prominent feature of the painting is the night sky filled with / replete with stars which dot the twilight.
Those stars are brightening a scenery which would otherwise be plunged in full darkness.
Thus we are allowed to catch a glimpse of some city dwellings strewn over ( be strewn over = éparpillés) the landscape. A closer look enables us to grasp a church towering above the village with its steeple pointed at the sky to remind us of the overbearing/ domineering presence of god and religion.
But the main sight which lies in the foreground is that humongous/ gignatic cypress tree which seems to swirl under an invisible wind.
One is gobsmacked by the undulating depiction/ representation of the tree and its surroundings .
What emotion did the author want to convey ( convey = transmettre) ? did he wish to epitomise / symbolise the heat which even at dusk lingers or did he mean to render / convey the strength of the breeze in the tree ‘s branches ?
We will never know but the dusky and mesmerizing / fascinating vision of this astounding landscape compels us to stare and vibrate at the sight of such skills and mastery.
