STEP 1 READ THE TEXT AND FIND THE ADJECTIVES THAT WOULD DEFINE A GOOD EMPLOYEE IN YOUR VIEW ?
Profile 1: Susan
Susan is 30 and from the USA. She has six years experience teaching in Chinese primary schools and speaks fluent Chinese.
She is an enthusiastic, creative and amusing teacher. She is supportive and friendly with a good sense of humour. She is a real team player. This quality makes her popular with her students, their parents and other teachers.
However colleagues complain that she is often disorganised and sometimes late for meetings. She is inexperienced as a leader and very laid back. She wants to develop but she will need to become a more determined person to succeed as a head teacher.
Profile 2: Tony
Tony is 52 and from England. He has worked for this school for two years. Before that he used to be a manager in England. He is ambitious and has a lot of initiative. In addition he is well organised, sensible and always punctual. His management experience could really help us.
In the classroom he is energetic and confident. However he can be frank and demanding. Some colleagues find him difficult to work with. He isn’t always a good team player and needs to become more communicative and diplomatic.
Profile 3: Mike
Mike has taught for more than 30 years in Australia. His experience could be useful to us. He is always smartly dressed, confident and reliable.
In the classroom he is strict and keeps good discipline but is respected by his students.
But some people think his teaching style is traditional. He is apathetic about new ideas such as using computers in the classroom. He seems to lack initiative and hasn’t tried to learn Chinese.
He is a serious person and doesn’t socialize with colleagues outside the classroom.
He is very responsible but he is also 63 years old. Is he still energetic enough to move the school forward? It is for you to decide.
