READING THE TEXT

REPHRASING IT
The story starts on a boat heading towards Manhattan and more precisely Ellis Island which is an Emigration station which welcomed newcomers (foreigners, aliens, expatriates, immigrants). It narrates (gives us an account of) the story (aventures) of a hero with a dodgy (fishy) past who is a former member from the IRA. He wants to settle in the US (his aim is to move to the USA). So (thus, consequently) he lies to be accepted and therefore creates a fake identity. As a result, he pretends to be British when he is actually (in reality) Irish. He goes through a medical exam in order to discover (find out) if he is healthy (fit).

DETAILED UNDERSTANDING
a) He pretends he is single while he is actually married to a Miss O'shea
b) Although (bien que ) he says he started his journey from London, he actually started in Dublin
c)Even though ( bien que) he deceives ( deceive= tromper) the immigration officer , he is actually irish and not British as he pretends to be.
