Introduction
In most cases people hold that a criminal should be
punished for his acts.
But what should be the punishment ? life long
imprisonment, an electric tag on your ankle or the death penalty.
That is the question we are going to tackle today.
To make an informed decision we should first define what
is the death penalty or more precisely what are the means used in the countries
that have not yet abolished it .
When a crime is regarded as extremely violent or
particularly cruel, a jury is prompt to sentence an offender to the death
penalty which means executing the convict via a lethal injection, gas poisoning
, electric chair or a firing squad.
This might sound
barbaric and that is why people might relent = hesitate from applying this
harsh sentence.
So let us examine both sides of the coin

BODY OF THE ESSAY
The
cons
First of all , it
might be regarded as barbaric to kill someone for a murder , namely to do
exactly what the criminal is condemned for. Do we not become criminals
ourselves ?
Moreover some famous cases have proven that the police
and the justice system are often wrong. Thus it would be ghastly to think that
we might kill an innocent person.
Lastly the death
penalty is final and thus there is no chance for the criminal to have any form
of redemption
Transition
On the other hand we might that the family of the victim
might not see things in the same light.

The pros
A defender of the death penalty argue that an eye for an eye is a valid answer to such horrendous crimes
We must also take into account the necessity for the
victim’s family to get a sense of closure to come to term = to accept somehow
the death of their loved ones.
Lastly let me add that the victim was innocent and yet
was condemned to the death penalty without having committed any crime. So it is
quite fair that the offender should suffer the same fate.

Opinion
I have to admit i have in a quandary as far as this
question is concerned.
In my view murderers , peadophiles in particular and sex
offenders should not be allowed to spend the rest of their life in prison
because it is both costly for society and unfair for the victim and his/her
family.
On the other hand i reckon that killing someone is
inhuman and brutal and thus should not be used by a democratic regime all the
more as the offender might have mitigating circumstances
Conclusion
In a nutshell after carefully scrutinizing = analysing
both sides of the argument i have to confess i did not reach a definite answer
to the issue of the death penalty.
I know the harshest régimes are using it to silence their
political opponent as well and people are being killed by wars everyday.
So the question remains to be seen on how we can achieve
peace in this world.
