Here are the answers to the questions :
STUDY OF THE SCENES
SCENE 1 :
1. COMMITEE FOR THE CIVIL RIGHTS
- why are they marching? What do they want?
they demand the end of the Unionist rule that is the control by the Irish in favor of the British domination. They want to protest against the discrimination the Catholics have to face/ suffer in Norther ireland
- what are their accusations?
They accuse the British governent not to respect its promises.Ever since the arrival of the British troops in the North what they have seen inforced = implemented= applied are only tougher rules/ laws to control civil disobedience/war like tougher curfews and especially internment that is the imprisonment of people without trial for long periods.
-What is the adjective they use to describe their march? What are they alluding to?
they want their march to be a peaceful one. They are refering to/alluding to / hinting at other civil rights movements in the world such as MLK's .Let's remember that we are in 1972 so only a few years after 1968.
As one of the leaders of the movement said in the film: we are part of a global worldwide movement.
-Find the word in General Ford’s speech that echo this adjective?
general ford on the contrary considers/ views any demonstrations as a sign of possible “ violence” as said in the 6th paragraph
2.GENERAL FORD
- What decision has he taken?
the general has decided to ban all marches, processions and demonstrations in an atempt to prevent any acts of violence and disturbances.
-why?
the British government considers that the situation in Northern Ireland is unmanageable and that Troubles have to be ended.
-But what is his secret motive?
He pretends that he wants to prevent any violence taking place but what his unofficial motive is to arrest/ put behing bars/ lay a trap for all the hooligans who are responsible for the civil unrest. So While pretending to forbid the demonstration, he hopes it will go on anyway to be able to lay a trap for the hoboes who are throwing stones at the British soldiers all the time.
2. THE DIRECTOR
-what is the purpose of that scene?
he aims at contrasting both positions/ the visions of the two camps.
-Why did he choose to present both sides at the same time?
he wishes to stress/ underline/highlight/accentuate the differences on both sides of the conflict .But he might also wish to give us an impression of neutrality to allow us to shape our own opinion thanks to the facts that he would have presented us with.
SCENE 2 :
THE SOLDIERS
-what is the state of mind of the soldiers?
the soldiersare bitter and acrimonious because they are fed up with the treatment they are receiving from the local population.Instead of being welcomed as heroes who are present to maintain peace, they are regarded as a force of occupation/ enemies.
- what do they want to do ?
they wish to get a revenge/have their own back.
- Are they unanimous ?
NO
THE SOLDIER : THE BLACK SHEEP
- what are the arguments used by the moderate soldier?
the hooligans are only kids
Furthermore the march is a non-violent one meant to defend their civil rights and not to stir violence or create any riots
- Do the others agree with him and what are their reasons?
They strongly disapprove of his arguments.they believe that any one taking part in these marches are potential terrorists who deserved to be punished if they haven't got the sense to remain at home and keep away from the hooligans.
- in the end, does he accept their point of view and why?
he is forced to accept because they are clearly threatening him
I quote “you're either with us or you're not”
- Quote the sentence that shows they foresee a drama might occur?
“You've got to stick with us on this.Whatever happens, we'll sort that out between us.”
Which implies that they are preparing themselves to some sort of drama or confrontation and they are even hoping for it.
Therefore they are pressuring the other soldier into supporting them all the way even up to lying to save them.
THE DIRECTOR
-what is the purpose of that scene?
The director aims at showing the state of mind of the soldiers just before the events. They weem so wind up (remonter) that the situation was bound to turn bad.
- is the structure parallel to the first scene ?
this scene mirrors/parallels the first one because we have again two opposite sides even within the soldiers and this opposition reminds us of the confrontation between general ford and the leader of the civil rights movement.
SCENE 3
THE CHARACTERS
- what are the links between the characters?
- we witness/see the discussion of a sister and her brother. The brother in law that is the sister's husband also takes part in the conversation.
- What are the sister’s feelings?
The sister is scared and anguished at what might happen to her brother.
- What is she afraid of?(2 things)
- first because she knows he has been one of the hooligans before and that he has been to prison on that account/ for that reason. Thus she is anxious he might go back to prison or even worse.Besides he has been going out with a protestant girl which might lead into troubles if either the protestants or the Catholics find out.
- What do we find out about Gerry’s girlfriend?
- he has been dating a protestant from the other side of town, Irish street so the Protestant district of Belfast while he is from the Bogside, that is the catholic area.
- Why does Gerry attack the Brits?
- he states : “That kept them away from the area for a while. If it wasn't for us you wouldn't be able to live here.”
- He means by that that the Unionist rule would have been imposed on their district as well if he and the likes of him/ others like him had not put up some resistance.
- What does he blame his brother in law for?
he charges him with working for the Brits / the British.
- What does his brother in law answer to that?
he replies that those jobs are the only ones available and thererfore that if it wasn't for him they would not be able to eat at all/ to put food on the table.
THE DIRECTOR :
-What is the purpose of the scene? ( 2 reasons)
His goal is to go back to the origings of the conflict that is a confrontation between the Catholics and the protestants as we can see when the girlfriend is mentioned as well as Gerry's criticism against his brother-in-law.
Away from the politicians we are given the vision of the people/ of the grass-root / the ordinary actor.
Moreover the love story between a catholic and a protestant hints at the possibility of a reconcialiation between both sides that the presence of the military prevents.
- why is this scene important in view of the end of the film?
because thanks to this scene the director makes us closer to one of the main characters of the film. Moreover it shows that this poor guy had no intention to become violent. So the audience will feel even more pity in front of his death at the end of the film and the way the soldiers framed him by planting bombs in his pockets while dying in a car that they had blocked at a barricade.
-
- What are the new divisions presented in this extract?
the director is unveiling another rift = breach that is the disagreement which can exist within a family with some members supporting the stability brought by the British soliders and those rebelling against the British that they consider as invaders.
So the conflict goes beyond the religious one.
GENERAL OUTLINE
What do all these scenes have in common?
they are all conveying (convey= transmettre) an image of opposition/ conflict by putting side by side two opposite camps.
We might add that the song by U2 inspired by the events is entitled Sunday Bloody Sunday .this title is striking as it embodies the very conflict in Northern Ireland with the two religious camps represented by the word Sunday are standing on each side of the bloody consequences of their acts with the word BLOODY right in the middle.
What can we conclude about the position of the director?Do you find him biased or not?
At first sight he seems unbiased as he attempts to show throughout the film all the actors and their arguments.
Still the gruesome details of the events with the bloody corpse or Gerry's death will no doubt convince the audience that the military are to blame for what happened.
We have to underline that even the format of the film is there to reinforce this apparent neutrality as the director chose to shoot his film as a news report with cuts and blanks to go from one scene to the other.Still the facts are so blantantly/ obviously/clearly shocking and in disfavor of the soldiers and the British army as a whole that we are bound to take side for the Catholics and the marchers and victims.
HERE IS THE PLAN THAT I SUGGESTED :
