TOPIC 2 STAND AND TALK THE GIG ECONOMY  WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK FOR UBER ?

THE DEFINITION

, it is "a labour market characterised by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance work, as opposed to permanent jobs"

In the gig economy, instead of a regular wage, workers get paid for the "gigs" they do, such as a food delivery or a car journey.

it is either a working environment that offers flexibility with regard to employment hours, or... it is a form of exploitation with very little workplace protection.

THE PROS AND CONS OF THE GIG ECONOMY

THE PROS

FOR WORKERS

·       Flexibility

·       Greater independence

·       Variety of jobs

Ø  IT allows you to have more flexibility in your job and greated independence

Ø  It enables you to access a larger variety of jobs .

FOR COMPANIES

·       Lower costs

·       The ability to scale down ( to scale down = réduire ses effectifs) quickly

·       A pool = a team of flexible workers

·       A low unemployment rate

·

Ø  It lower the costs for the companies as they do not have to pay for social benefits because the gig economy workers are regarded as independent workers

Ø  The companies can scale down quickly when the demands are dwindling like for example at amazon after christmas

Ø  The companies can rely on a more flexible pool of employees that they can no longer use if they do not need them any longer

THE CONS

FOR WORKERS

·       No benefits

·       No sick pay

·        No holiday pay

·       No guarantee of work

·       Isolation

·       No colleagues

·       More stress

·       Being exploited

·       Precarious

·       No guarantee of a minimum number of hours

·       No fixed salary

·       A vulnerable poisition

·       (to) struggle ( lutter/ avoir du mal ) with ….

·       (to) dehumanize

FOR COMPANIES

·       Less reliable workers

·       Social criticism

Ø  The downsides for the companies is that their employees are less reliable and can decide not to work for them if they find a better offer elsewhere.

Ø  As employees are in demand the companies  might have to pay more for the same services in time of high demand
