Goal : the pros and cons of social media

TASK : decide if we should  put an age limit to the use of social media

ANTICIPATION :

1.    When do you check your phone

I checked it very often ( SOUVENT) several times a day  and at least ( au moins) once every hour

2.    What do you do on it

I check my messages, i play on some apps , i watch videos and i bet on sports sites.But i also work and interact with my friends

3.    Do you believe social media have a negative or positive impact on your life  

It can be dangerous or harmful for some people

WHAT DID YOU UNDERSTAND ? answer the following questions

1.    Who is molly russel ?

She was a teenager who was known for being very active on social media .But she suffered from depression and mental health issues

2.    What happened to her ?

She committed suicide after being exposed to a lot of material on line about self harm and suicide

3.    What are the accusations of the parents against social media ?

The parents blame social media because they do not control their algorithms which shows always the same material to people even if this is harmful content

What are the arguments for kids staying on social media?

A media and communications lecturer at the University of Sydney, Dr Catherine Page Jeffery, doesn't think enforcing ( = imposing ) an age limit is a good move( = is a good thing)  because it would be tricky = difficult to impose and would deny (= priver )  young people access to platforms they value, learn on and derive entertainment from.

She acknowledges= recognises  children face potential harms = sufferings  online, including bullying and grooming = sexual harrassment, but she questions whether banning kids from those sites is the answer.

"If we keep young people off social media and the internet altogether then they don't develop the skills = abilities  to actually develop resilience = resistance ," she says.

Instead, she suggests a "multi-faceted" approach, which would include social media platforms doing more to protect young people, as well as parents and teachers helping to encourage safer use.

"Age verification is a measure that governments can implement = put in place

She believes kids have got to learn to be prepared and develop resilience

Moreover she believes that kids derives a lot of pleasure and source of entertainment from these platforms

She suggests a multifaceted approach with the parents controlling their children’s use of social media and teachers encouraging safer use .
