INTRODUCTION : same as usual
SUMMARY OF THE FACTS
TIP : analyse the title
Bosses are ordering workers to come back to the office.
The word order is really strong and shows the determination and the anger of some CEOs who are trying to force workers to give up on teleworking and thus to come back to the office full time .
1 ST PARAGRAPH :
Employers are fed up of seeing their offices empty. ( to be fed up with/ of = en avoir assez)
They want more employees to come back to work in the office everyday.
Thus some companies have issued directives to order workers who are doing remote working or even hybrid work to come back to the office full time.
Let us define teleworking . This practice had skyrocketed since the covid pandemic which compelled = forced workers to stay at home for health reasons.
Thanks to the digital revolution workers are often able to perform = do all tasks from home without having to commute or come to the office any days of the week.
Hybrid work is a regular occurrence ( an occurrence = a phenomenon) nowadays and is a middle ground between office work and teleworking . It means working from home at least 2 days a week while coming to the office the 3 other days .
The text underlines that even hybrid work does not stand in the good books of ( be in someone’s good books = when someone like you ) the employer who wish ( wish someone to ) their employees to head back= to return to the headquarters of the companies.
SECOND PARAGRAPH
This paragraph highlights the diverging views of the employers versus their staff.
While( pendant que ) the managers believe that working from home is unproductive and inefficient ( i quote line 9 ) their personnel are keen to ( be keen to = to want to ) stay at home to save on commuting time .
The workers also believe that meetings and interacting with colleagues make them less productive.
On the other hand their superiors reckon that interaction improves problem solving i quote line 11 and strengthens = reinforces the identity of the company. Moreover they need people in the office to train new hires.
Therefore the new trend as the title points out is to recall employees to the office for 5 days a week.
THIRD PARAGRAPH
But the downside in this reversal of attitude/ in this shift is that people are quitting their jobs in droves = en masse .
Indeed they got used to working ( get used to + ing = avoir pris l habitude de ) from home and wish to find a company that gives them the same opportunities.
Hence = thus the companies are struggling to ( to struggle to = lutter pour / avoir du mal à ) find ways to convince people to attend their office while keeping their workers on the paylist.( garder leur travailleur)
FOLLOW UP WORK :
1) the pros and cons of teleworking
2) the solutions to attract more employees back in the office cf gender equality how to make women work more ( care centers in the headquarters /flexible working hours/ bonuses for extra time / samller headquarters closer to their homes/ company cars to ease the commute / the 4 -day week )
CONCLUSION
This text which dates back from 2023 is quite topical ( dactualité) as we can see this trend soaring and more and more companies demanding higher attendance level from their staff.
And yet we might wonder ( on peut se demander ) which impact this move might have on the planet since it might lead to a rise in pollution from commuting.
Moreover recent studies have shown that employers’ move to ban teleworking is in fact to cover up = hide the need to reduce their companies’ workforce.
As a matter of fact as employees quit their jobs because they are looking for better working conditions, we notice that = we remark that they are not often replaced by new hires all the more so as ( dautant plus que ) we soon might witness a new digital revolution with the adoption of AI in most domains.

THE ENVIRONMENT
TOPIC 1 PLASTIC POLLUTION
The industrial pollution is killing our planet
A massive quantity of rubbish is dumped in the ocean
The garbage is thrown into the ocean
The plastic garbage releases toxins
The ocean garbage patch is composed of 3.5 million tons of rubbish
Plastic is non biodegradable
The ocean garbage patch is composed of industrial pollution
In the middle of the ocean lies millions of debris of plastic / plastic debris
It has an impact on our fertility as we consume fish that have absorbed toxins
Our tap water is toxic
STEP 4 SO WHAT SHOULD WE DO ?
Not use single use plastic ( plastique à usage unique)
To reduce pollution we should use cardboard instead ( cardboard = carton)
We should stop using plastic bags
In order to stop pollution we need to sort out the garbage
We could collect plastic waste
we should stop throwing garbage in the sea
my advice would be to implement a plastic charge
we should recycle
we had better use reusable cutlery in fast food joints
we should promote reusable plastic items= objects
we had better use landfills (a landfill = une décharge) for plastic alone
TOPIC 2 ELECTRIC VEHICLES
FOR OR AGAINST ELECTRIC CARS
FOR |
AGAINST |
Save money on gasoline Save money overall Save money on service and maintenance No oil change The cost of batteries are falling Be good for the environment Do not make any noise Cure noise pollution Drive better as the transmission is better More modern Brake better Need to test drive to make up your mind |
Price of electricity is going up Electric cars Expensive = they are not affordable (abordable) Not much money saved Rent the batteries Have to replace batteries quite often Producing electricity damages the environment |
