INTRODUCTION

Data centre power use 'to surge six-fold in 10 years'

26 March 2024

SUMMARY OF THE TEXT DO NOT FORGET TO USE LINK WORDS cf SURVIVAL KIT

The boom in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing will drive a spike+ A SURGE + AN INCREASE + A RISE  in energy use, the National Grid has predicted.

Both rely on data centres - warehouses full of computer systems.

Chief executive John Pettigrew said the power those data centres use would increase six-fold in the next decade.

He said the grid was becoming "constrained"= restricted  and "bold action" was needed to create a network able to cope with "dramatically" growing demand.

Power hungry

Most observers agree that whatever that future looks like, data centres will be a part of it.

They have become integral to our modern lives and technologies, operating as a physical home to our digital information stored in the so-called "cloud" and other forms of IT equipment that power services and platforms.

But all that computing power comes at an environmental cost. Some studies have warned that the AI industry alone could consume as much energy as a country the size of the Netherlands by 2027.

The sector has been enjoying an economic boom after the launch of chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and image-making tools such as Midjourney.

Concern over their energy use and demands on infrastructure has increased in recent years.

Official data showed that in the Republic of Ireland, which is home to the European headquarters of several big tech firms such as Google and Facebook-parent Meta, data centres accounted for nearly a fifth of all electricity used in 2022.

The amount of electricity being used by data centres in the country has risen by 400%

THE PROS AND CONS  OF AI

TOPIC 1 AI and chatGPT

The cons

1. It threatens the human race as it can take control over us.

2. It can steal our jobs and make more and more people redundant

3. As it gains knowledge it can develop tools of mass destructions

4. It has no ethic soi t does not know where to stop

5. It can be hacked and thus ends up in the hands of criminals

6. Via chatGPT it leads to plagiarism and renders exams obsolete

7. It triggers automation in the industry and thus reduces the number of jobs

available

8. It might make humans less and less intelligent as it does not encourage the

use of our brains

9. It makes the use of mobile phones so easy that it favours phone addictions

with all of its dangers / woes

10. It consumes massive amount of electricity and energy and increases our

levels of pollution.

11. Hackers use AI to create deepfake videos .People might be fooled into

believing they are true and thus the very notion of reality is challenged .

The pros

1. It helps use make new discoveries and invent new objects

2. It can lead to cures and improve our health

3. As it lies at the basis of robotics it might help develop robots who could then

aleviate our workload

4. Robots could become our multipurpose servants and thus make our life much

easier

5. We could use Ai to innovate in the field of space and thus discover new

planets which one day may welcome us.

6. Humanbeings are prompt to make mistakes while robots do not.

7. A whole new generation of influencers have appeared. It has hence become

easier to make money via the internet. Therefore we might say that AI has

boosted sales and thus the companies’s profits

The solutions

1.We must develop commissions whose main job would be to ensure that the use of

AI remains under control

2. governments must legislate to make sure that companies abide by strict rules.

3. we should learn to embrace this new technology instead of banning it and getting

back to the dark ages.
