PROJECT 1

THE PEACE WALL

SESSION 6

BLOODY SUNDAY

GOAL : BLOODY SUNDAY

WORDS OF THE DAY translate

A   MURAL ( une fresque)

You have to see both sides of the coin = you have to see both sides of the argument

A   passerby ( un pieton)

Retaliation = a vengeance

to retaliate = to get a revenge

on the other hand = on the flip side ( d un autre côté)

a thorny issue ( un problème épineux)

STEP 1 A DEBATE republicans versus unionists

 THE CATHOLIC SIDE

we share a culture so we should be united

we have lived under your control / your thumb and we resent that . All the more as you do not care about us . case in point during the famine when you let us die .We live in a democracy but you betrayed us .We demand equal rights  after years of religious persecution. We have to stop fighting over nothing and we are the victims here.

THE PROTESTANT SIDE

we have supported you financially for centuries so you should at least be respectful.WWe regarded you as being selfish while we should be united .You expect us to solve your problems and you are not even thankful. All these conflicts are something of the past so let us turn a new leaf.We provided you with good services and protection while you bombarded us and killed us via the IRA.religions should not divide us .Thus let us look towards the future and unite.

Find the missing word

1 can't believe the news today = It just can't be ......true............................

I can't' close my eyes = I just can't ignore the .....situation/conflict /news........................

I can't make it go away = I can't .......forget ............................. this image

How long must we sing this song? = When will it ..end....................?

We can be as one tonight = we must unite ..........instead........................... of fighting.

Broken bottles under children's feet = children ........trapped/crying /live ................... in the debris.

Bodies strewn across the streets = there are dead/many ...................... bodies lying in the street.

across the dead end streets = there doesn't seem to be a ...way................... out.

I won't heed the battle call = I don't want to .....fight.........................

It puts my back up = it makes me feel .......TRAPPED..................

It puts my back up against the wall = I .......CANT...................  escape.

And the battle's just begun = this is just the ..BEGINING ................................

There's many lost = many people have been ..KILLED................................

The trenches dug within our hearts = this ....CONFLICT ..................... has left scars (cicatrices) in people's hearts.

Mothers, children, brothers, sisters tom apart = the war has separated many members of the same ....FAMILY ....................

Wipe the tears from your eyes = stop ...........CRYING .........................

Your bloodshot eyes = your eyes are red like ......BLOOD ............................. because you've cried too much

And it's true we are immune = people have got used to the war: they don't react any  ......MORE ...........................

When fact is fiction and TV reality = it's hard to make any  ..DIFFERENCE........................... between what is real and what is not real.

And today the millions cry = too ....MANY....................... people are suffering because of this war.

We eat and drink while tomorrow they die = we are ......INDIFFERENT........................... to the others' predicament and hardships. (maybe a reference to the Lord's Last Supper with his 12 apostles before he died)

The real battle to claim the victory Jesus won = Jesus Christ died for our sins to SAVE ............................... the world.
