STEP 1 TEST
STEP 2
STEP 4 THEN THIS HAPPENED
brexit happened and thus the Uk left the EU after a referendum which took place in 2016 and which was implemented in 2020 after lengthy negotiations.
STEP 5 SO WHAT WAS THE CONSEQUENCE FOR IRELAND.Which map represents ireland before Brexit ?Explain.
|
|
on the left we can see the map of the island of ireland before Brexit.
We might notice that the border is invisible and the island seems to be reunited which must have pleased the republicans.
The Unionists were in favour of the EU as well because Northern ireland received loads of financial contributions from the EU which improved the living conditions of everyone in the North
STEP 6 DID NORTHERN IRELAND VOTE FOR OR AGAINST BREXIT ?
ANSWER :
Who voted to remain in your opinion ?
Most citizens in Northern ireland voted to REMAIN in the EU especially those living alongside the border who feared a new border which would have sparked new tensions .
A new border might have reminded them of the Troubles.
Moreover a bordeer is needed to check the goods as well as the pople and might have been regarded as a hurdle for the free movements and trade on both sides of the border.
Unfortunately as it was a referendum and as the majority of british people , more precisely 54 percent of the population had voted to leave, Northern ireland had to follow suit and leave the EU.
STEP 7 SUDDENLY A BORDER BECAME NECESSARY
Why ?
Why is that a problem ?
So what are the solutions ? Put a new border on the map and explain .
To control goods coming from the EU a border was necessary .
several options were possible.
1. CCTV cameras alongside the border but the residents might have resented this surveillance.
2.putting the boder where it formally existed but it might have been a reminder of the Troubles when checkpoints and watch towers were a common sight.
3.So they decided to set the border in THE IRISH SEA and to have a border control in Belfast Harbour.
The republicans are satisfied with this solution which avoids a border and brings them a step closer to the reunification of the whole island.
On the other hand the loyalists protest against this border that they regard as a means to isolate them further from the main land and the home wountry.
1.
What is the backstop ? it is an insurance policy designed to avoid a hard border ( a hard border = reestablishing the boder with border controls and customs ) if no other solution to police / check on the border are found by 2020
2.
How do you call people who support the
brexit ?THE BREXITEERS
3.
Why do they resent the backstop ? because the brexiteers want to leave the EU and they stand against the Back stop because they fear the UK will never be rid of the EU and that the EU would still have some form of influence on Northern Irish policies
4. What is the purpose of the back stop and thus what needs to be found ?
A new form of border needs to be found
And that is what they did in 2020 with the IRISH SEA BORDER
