INFORMATION THE DATES OF THE EXAM
STEP 1 DIVIDING THE ROOM INTO 2 GROUPS ACCORDING TO THEIR RELIGION
AN ORANGE ONE FOR THE PROTESTANT
A GREEN ONE FOR THE CATHOLICS
STEP 2 CHOOSE A PROFESSION
SO READ THE FOLLOWING TEXT AND DECIDE WHICH PROFESSION YOU WOULD HAVE
Catholic ownership of land was minimal. Most of the lands thus was owned by protestants .. By law Catholics were prohibited from holding leases ( un bail = titre d’exploitation de la terre) in excess of thirty-one years or for lives,
Catholics were deprived of the vote between 1728 and 1793. Yet there was an active Catholic lobby that contested many anti-Catholic measures in the Irish Parliament.
Protestant dominance was in place by the 1690s in towns with the guilds (that is an association of merchants who control who has the job or not and who is allowed to run a business or not) becoming Protestant dominated.
Catholics were still excluded from key administrative offices in BELFAST and other cities
CHOOSE A PROFESSION
CATHOLICS - scavengers ( fouilleur de poubelles) rag pickers (chiffoniers) , sweepers ( balayeurs) casual porters, boot blacks ( cireurs de chuassures) , newspaper sellers, day labourers, seasonal farm workers, scullery maids = domestics domestic servant. Craftsmen ( artisans) bakers, distillers brewers carpenters grocers ( épiciers) skinners, tanners, woolen drapers, and distiller
|
PROTESTANTS tradesmen, junior bank clerks (employés de bureau) book keepers (des comptables) merchants shopkeepers who owned their shops teachers doctors bankers insurance brokers army officer navy officer barrister advocate
|
STEP 2 HOW DO YOU REACT IN FRONT OF THIS SITUATION ? What would you say to defend your position ?
the reaction could range from hatred to disgust towards the protestants.
On the other hand the protestants despised(to despise = mépriser) the catholics and thus their spite ( mépris) / their scorn justified that state of things .
STEP 3 THE GOVERNMENT OF IRELAND ACT OF 1920
1.Recap to be LEARNT FOR THE BAC
The Government of Ireland Act 1920 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. it is also known as the Fourth Home Rule Bill
. The Act was intended to partition Ireland into two self-governing polities: the six north-eastern counties were to form "Northern Ireland", while the larger part of the country was to form "Southern Ireland". Both territories were to remain part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and provision was made for their future reunification through a Council of Ireland. The Act was passed by the British Parliament in November 1920
The smaller Northern Ireland was duly created with a devolved (décentralisé) government and remained in the UK.
The larger Southern Ireland was not recognized by most of its citizens, who instead recognized the self-declared Irish Republic in the ongoing Irish War of Independence.
The conflict resulted in the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921. Under the treaty, Ireland would leave the UK (with the option for Northern Ireland to opt out and remain in the UK, which it immediately did) in December 1922 and become the Irish Free State, which would later evolve into today's Republic of Ireland..

3. What are the consequences on your family’s life ?
SOME EXPLANATIONS ABOUT THE IRA
The IRA was first created in 1919 to fight against the British during the Irish War of Independence.
They were using guerilla tactics including ambushes, raids and sabotage to force the British government to negotiate.
It led to the Anglo irish treaty which was unacceptable for some members of the IRA. So as you know the group split into two factions :
One under the leadership of Michael Collins supported the treaty.
The other , called the irregulars, under Eamon de Valera opposed it.
The irregulars lost / capitulated but they never surrendered their arms and sot hey form the core ( cœur) of the current IRA.
They organised sporadic incidents throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s but they did not have much support from the Catholic population

1.Guess what the nationality of the reporter
is ?the reporter is most definitely British as he denounces the violence as being fully undeserved and provoked by the Catholics.
2. if you were the British government what would you do ?.The Norther ireland protestants are blaming you for not protecting them.SO WHAT DO YOU DECIDE TO DO ?
The British government decided to send the British army to try to maintain the peace between the two communities. At the beginning even the catholics welcomed the army as they believed that it would indeed restaure the peace. But they soon realised that the British army was siding (to side with = se mettre du côté de) with the protestants community. A feeling of mistrust grew among the catholic community.and this gave rise to more attacks on the part of the IRA and even more more retaliatory measures from the army. This period which started in 1959 was called the TROUBLES .
WHAT IS THE REACTION OF THE POPULATION ? of the catholics ? of the protestants ?
