lesson
anglais renforce
tuesday the 19 TH OF january
task :
vocabulary: the environment
the telly

Word of the day :keep me posted = tiens moi au courant

A DEBATE : FOR OR AGAINST TV

In favour of TV :
 TV keeps us posted;
 The telly is entertaining;
 The telly can teach us great values;
 TV can act as a role model;
 TV can be educationnal;
 TV gives us news from all over the world in a matter of seconds;
 TV helps you learn new languages;
 It brings you your favorite shows;
 Its keeps you busy;
 It allows you a means of escapism to forget about your worries
 It opens my eyes on different issues, it broadens my vision of things;

Against TV:
 TV can lead to obesity;
 We have no means to screen/select the shows;
 Too many adds = commercials;
 TV can make us forget our homework;
 TV uses too much of our time;
 TV offers mostly boring shows;
 TV is presenting us with more and more violence;
 TV can control our views and opinions;
 TV prevents you from communicating with people

Eastenders = a Tvshow, which has been on for 25 years, and quite look like « Plus belle la vie » in France.
X factor is the biggest rating show at the moment.

Still thanks to Tv you can be informed on essential issues such as global warmin.
Environment :
Brainstorming
 pollution;
 storm;
 hurricane;
 strong winds;
 tornadoes;
 forest fires;
 tsunami;
 flooding;
= due to: - global warming;
 the rising temperatures;
 the increasing number of people;
 the ozone layer;
 trap (pieger);
 glaciers;
 melt (fondre)
 carbon dioxyde gases;
 the atmosphere = ozone layer
 solar energy/solar panels
 without it, we would freeze;
 fossil fuels;
 the earth;
 deteriorate;
 increase = rise (augmenter)
 rising temperatures;
 Al Gore
 CO2 emissions
 garbage
 natural ressources
 Toxic rain
 the climate
 Rio Protocole
 freezing temperatures
 snow storms

What is global warming?
Carbon dioxyde and other gases warm the surface of the earth naturally by trapping solar energy into the atmosphere.
That is a good thing because without this natural phenomenon we would freeze
By burning fossil fuel such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests , we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the temperature are no longer in equilibrium but are rising dramatically Poses a grave problem
The planet is in growing danger
If we do not act now, the process will be irreversible / the pollution will be unchecked / unlimited

GROUP WORK
Causes :
 global warming has been sparked off by the green house effect;
 It was caused by Human beings because they're selfish and individualistic;
 Global warming stems from the number of people increasing on earth;
 the rising temperatures come from the deforestation, the transports;
 the consuming society;
MRS DEVIENNE 'S ADDITION:

Growing number of people on the planet
So more pressure on food demand
On water supply
Economic demands
Increase in production
Exhaust fumes coming from cars/ thrown into the air
Toxic waste out of the industry
Cutting down forests
Nature equilibrium is unbalanced
Wanton exploitation of nature
Fertilisers
Pump CO2 in the atmosphere
Overcrowding
spray
Excessive demands for electric power

The consequences:

 we can notice the hurricanes appear more and more often;
 we can observe the glaciers melt in a fast way/ in no time
 the level of the water is up/ rising as a consequence.
 As a result of global warmin, the climate is getting hotter
 As a consequence of global warming , we can witness hurricanes such as the devastating Katrina in New Orleans
 As a result, storms, tsunamis, forest fires, floodings are occuring more and more frequently.

MRS DEVIENNE' S ADDITION
hurricanes/ tornadoes/ storms/ rising level of the sea/a baffling wind/bolts of lightning/pelting/ persistant rain/the flood/lay under water/go up in smoke/ in flames /scorching/
Climate change
A heat wave
Temperatures are rising
The loss of the world as we know it
The increase in natural catastrophes such as hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons and floods, droughts (sécheresses) and enormous downpours = excessive rains
Higher frequency of heat waves and time-record hot days
The rising velocity of the wind which will provoke storms
Huge death toll ( a toll = un taux) and enormous damage
Disappearance of some animal species such as polar bears
Shortage= lack of water
Increase number of infectious diseases as their vector is no longer killed by the cold during winter
The rise of sea level and thus the disappearance of major cities
Millions of people would be displaced
Glaciers are melting
Plants are being forced from their natural habitat
Storms and droughts are increasing in frequency

The solutions:
 We should chnage people's mentalities.
 we could use electric cars/ green cars with zero carbon emission
 We must recycle garbage
 we could but try water cars
 we should create cheaper electric cars to reduce pollution
 we could increase the carbon tax
 we had better recycle garbage and separate them
 we had better reduce CO2 emissions
 we might use less water and electricity to preserve natural ressources and save our precious planet.

MRS DEVIENNE' S ADDITION :
FIND FOSSIL FUEL SUBSIDIES/ REPLACEMENTS
USE RENEWABLE ENERGIES
SPARK NEW INNOVATION TO FIND ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
REDUCE EMMISSIONS + MITIGATION = reduction
Stir=arouse public opinion
Stop using our cars
Use public transport instead
Recycle
Limit carbon dioxide emission
Take commitments to find other sources of energy
Reduce our dependency on oil
SAVE WATER AND ELECTRICITY
Travel less and come back on more traditional ways and habits

OBAMA ' SPEECH AT THE COPENHAGUEN SUMMIT
Listen and complete his speech :
unchecked ( non régulé)

Homework : learn to define global warming.
