1O HEROES : portraits
a)number 3 : Doc Hendley
Doc hendley is a bartender residing in North Carolina .During he started studying to become a specialist in wines and beverages but decided to take a gap year to travel around the world.
During this year off he came across much poverty. He realized that most of the death that he could witness in the under developed countires that he had visited were mainly due to the lack of access to clean water
I quote « I began seeing the figures of the people who do not have access to clean water and it absolutly floored me. »
After retuning to school and back he is country, he decided that his job and his ability to associate with people where perfect tools to do something to solve the problem.
He asked his boss if he could organize wine tasting session where he would make people try new wines while at the same time he would ask them to participate to his charity to collect funds « to implement water projects in the developing world »
He thus created a charity called « Wine to Water » a direct reference to the bible where Jesus transformed water into wine.
His charity up to now has collected enough funds to bring safe water to more than « 25,000 individuals in refuge camps, orphanages, schools and hospitals and leper colony. »
What is amazing he says is that « you can be just a regular anybody. And you really, really can change the world. »
HERO NUMBER 4 : ANDREA IVORY
Andrea dwells (lives) in West Park, Florida. She is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with the disease in 2004.Through this ordeal ( épreuve) she discovered that not a lot of women had access to early detection as a mammogram is very expensive and especially for low-inome women. So women are not able to do it regularly and thus let things get worse and their cancer is then too advanced to be cured which leads to considerable deaths.
So Andrea after being cured decided to create a charity and to gather volunteers.
Together they go from door to door to warn people about the dangers of breast cancer and the need to do mammograms on a regular basis.
But what is essential is that she managed to organize free mammograms.Andrea and her team tell people the next day there will be a truck in their neighborhood to do some free mammograms . I quote « one mammogram recipient said « the convenient factor « of the free screening made the offer to hard to refuse »
I quote « since 2006,Ivory has helped provide more than 500 mammograms to eligible women » saving hundreds f women for a potential death.
HERO 5 :BETTY MAKONI
Betty makoni lives in England now but she comes from Zimbabwe. She had indeed to flee her country because she was seen as a menace by the male community in Zimbabwe. As a matter of fact a large portion of the population there is HIV positive. The disaster is that in this country there is , I quote « a widely held belief that if a man with HIV or AIDS rapes a virgin he will be cured of the disease. » This belief has led to the rape of hundreds of girls.
One of these victims was Betty herself as she was raped at the age of 6 years old and then again at the age of 14. This horror is going on as well because women are mostly refusig to talk about it because they are too ashamed .
Such was the attitude of Betty's mother who asked her to remain silent. But when Betty saw her mother being killed by her father , she decided that silence was the reason men were allowed to be unpunished for their acts.
Therefore she decided to create the Girl Child Network to give support to the rape victims.
Then she collected funds and bought a piece of land on which she created an EMPOWERMENT village that is a place where the victims can come to live.
Until now betty and her Girl Child Network has saved 35,000 girls.
Betty believes, I quote « If my organization didn't exist, the 35,000 girls I've saved from rape and abuse could have died by now. »
HERO 6 : jORGE MUNOZ
jorge munoz lives in New York. he came to America 20 years ago.He was born in Columbia. His father died when he was young so his mother has to leave him in Columbia to migrate to the states and work there.
Munoz followed her sometimes later and has since become a bus driver. But he remembers the poverty he once knew and that's maybe the reason why he decided to create a charity named An Angel in the Queens.
With the help of his family , he provides food to at least 140 homeless persons everyday. While his mother and sisters prepare the meals during the day, Jorge after work , at around 9.30 each night , put the food in his white pick up and distribute it to the hungry men sleeping in the streets of NY.
«I quote « For more than 4 years,Munoz and his family have been feeding those in need seven nights a week, 365 days a year. »
When asked about his motive, he answers that he is so thankful for having a stable job, a family and a home to call his own, that he wants to share that happiness by giving some food to others. »
HERO 7 :PENAFLORIDA
Penaflorida was raised and born in a shanty town in the Philippines.Because of his poverty , he was bullied by gangs who tried to force him into joining them. But he refused because he understood that he wanted to do something better of his life and not to be stuck in this poverty for ever.
he thus realised that to put an end to violence you had to provide an education to all the destitute kids living in those sorts of conditions to prevent them from joining gangs.
Indeed, I quote « In the philippines, teenage membership in urban gangs has surged to an estimated 130,000 in the past 10 years. »
Most of these youths end up in jail or become drug addicts.
Thus Penaflorida decided to create a charity organization called the Dynamic Teen Company. I quote « since 1997, an estimated 10,000 members » have helped penaflorida to teach more than « 1,500 children living in the slums. »
But what is quite baffling/astonishing is the way the Dynamic Teen Company has managed to brind this education right in the middle of the slums.
Indeed Penaflorida used pushcarts to go in the shnaty and even on dumps to provide an education to kids « ranging from the age of 2 to 14 »They teach them every saturday how to read, write, arithmetic and English.
Penaflorida is driven by his belief that , I quote « we are the change that you dream and I am the change that I dream. And collectively we are the change that this world needs. »
HERO 8 :BUDI SOEHARDI
At Kupang in Indonesia, Soehardi was a pilot with a descent enough salary. He was married and had 3 kids of his own.In 1999, he was about to leave on holidays when he saw a report on CNN about the situation in East timor where thousands were fleeing the combat zones.I quote « Hundreds of East Timorese were killed nad as many as 250,000 were displaced from their homes... »
I quote « families were living cardborad boxes, children were wearing rags for clothes and sanitation was nonexistent. »
At once Soehardi and his family felt prompted to act .They thus decided to coordinate donations, food , clothes and supplies. » But they did not end there.
They started building some rooms to welcome the orphans .From 3 to 9 rooms , they ended up creating an orphanage which opened in 2002 who could receive 47 children that was funded mainly by Soehardi's salary. But since then he has lost his job. They are trying to cope with the new data and are trying to collect as much fund as possible through their charity Roslin Orphanage. This will prove difficult all the more as budi and his family are adamant they will not treat the orphans differently from their own.
Where does he find the will to act?Maybe from his childhood as he himself lost his father at the age of 9.
