The cornerstone of my presentation will be the description of the following document

WHITE TEETH

What are Irie's plans?
She will endeavour to take a gap year
She seeks out to become a dentist/ to study dentistry
she has made up her mind to talk to her mother.
She is determined to talk to her in the middle of the night because her mother refuses / is adamant(etre déterminé) she will not talk to her during the day and her mother will be caught unaware (be caught unaware = être pris par surprise ) since she is bound to(be bound to = être obligé de) be sleepy.

4.What about the parents?
they can't stand the idea.They are fully against it.They oppose it wholeheartedly(de tout coeur) .

5.the conflict is bitter and protracted/long= lengthy (traine en longueur)

the mother and Irie are at each other's throat= they have a massive argument or row


6.Their conflict is similar to a war/ an armed conflict /some warfare
Irie is trying to negotiate
For the father , he is in neutral territory
He acts as a consciencious objector
He claims to have nothing to do with this fight/ this brawl ( bagarre)

the house is in chaos and as a consequence has been divided into 2 territories with the kitchen being viewed as neutral territory.
