New text
a)Read it
b)Global understanding
c) My correction

It narrates the story of a man who catches a glimpse ( catch a glimpse of = apercevoir/ entrevoir)of the statue of Liberty on Manhattan island after crossing the atlantic aboard the Reliance which is the name of his ship.He and other immigrants to the USA are routed towards Ellis Island the immigration station where they will have to go through a medical examination as well as some questioning and a literacy test ( to know if they can read English)before being allowed to disembark.
As opposed to the other passengers the narrator is thrilled by this new land of opportunities which will allow him to hide.He is called henry Drake and pretends to be coming from London He is a salesman by trade(by trade = de profession) .He is unmarried/single.But at the end of the extract we understand he’s been lying as he actually comes from Dublin, and is maried to a Miss o’shea. So we might suspect that he is fleeing from a dodgy (= dubious/ strange/ fishy)past and has to lie to be admitted as well as bribe (soudoyer) the immigration officer.

Homework :
The questions on the text are to be answered
