_What was the purpose of these exams? The doctors wanted to find contagious diseases, or if people would be unabled to work and thus a burden (un fardeau)for society.
_What would happen to someone with a curable disease? You were sent to the hospital.
_What would happen to someone who could not be cured?
they were sent BACK to the expense of the boat company.

_What was the function of that room? a Waiting room.
_What were the immigrants waiting for? They were waiting for the interview with legal inspectors who would ask them questions about their political views and their past history.
_How long would they stay? They would stay from three to five hours (if there wasn't any medical problems...).
LEGAL INSPECTION
_What did the immigrants had to prove?
They had to prove that they were not slaves, or communists.
_Who was rejected? The criminals and the slaves were rejected.

hey had to prove that they were able to speak and write English thanks to a literacy test
MONEY EXCHANGE
_What could the immigrants do in this room? They could exchange their money.
_What were they obliged to have? There were obliged to have 20$ in cash.

It was named the kissing spot (people were saying their goodby or kissing long-not-seen relatives

Some of them would take a ferry to go to New Jersey and the others would go to Manhattan.
