COMMENT ON THE DRAWING BY THE CLASS
A full correction will be given later on
Introduction
this doc is a drawing
its title could be The British versus the French/ The Froggies..its date is unknown.
the name of the author is not mentioned as well.still we can infer it tackles a fairly recent topic
it looks like a comic strip because the characters are all drawn in black and white .As the author first drew the French side so he was addressing a British audience. But the document displays ( montre) the stereotypes each people has about the other side .so the author must aim at condemning this form of preconceived ideas. As being at the roots of past and future confrontation.
Description
on the left side we might notice characters who obviously stand for the French people.
the channel separates both side and symbolizes the gap that might exist between both cultures.
the whole picture conveys a feeling of confrontation
Some of the sterotypes on display here are the supposed love of wine of the French which leads them to be viewed as drunkards .We might perceive as well the typical French bimbo displaying the tempting curves of her perfect figure (silhouette) The author is keen to show that thes characters are only caricatures as we might make out (remarquer) the French lover bragging about (se vanter) as well as the typical food French item such as the French baguette.
The striped tee shirt and the baguette are also present obviously.A more subtle analysis present us with one fine example of the French aristocracy , and the world-famous chef.
On the British side we might recognize some of the stereotypes that we French people currently take for granted (take for granted = prendre pour argent comptant) as far as the Bristish are condemned. A uttrely (entièrement) unattractive lady wearing over-sized swimsuit is here to remind us that we do view British women as cold and lacking sensuality. Her rolls of fat are there to indicate that beer and Fish and chips is not the perfect diet to preserve your figure. We may perceive as well the typical outfit of the City’s banker with his black suit and his bowled hat while the umbrella is there to emphasize the harshness of the weather. Last but not least, an opened tin on a tray carried by Mrs Millet is there to stress that British cuisine is not regarded as the most savoury.
Purpose of the author
he denounces stereotypes
the author points out the opposition between the French and the British
He warns us against any false judgment we could have based on those national stereotypes.
By putting side by side te stereotypes forged by both people , he comples us to recognize that those images are not grounded on reality but result purely and simply from enturies of ignorance.
As we are offended by the falseness of the stereotypes the British do hold against us, we are bound to (forcer de) admit that our own vision is flawed (imparfait)as well.
Opinion
a)My opinion on this drawing
b)My opinion on its topic :DO WE JUDEGE PEOPLE ON APPEARANCES ?
A TEXT : A YEAR IN THE MERDE
Brainstorming :What did you understand ?
in my opinion, it's a british man who comes to Paris as he has a one-year contract to work in a French business.
The very drawing of a sail at the beginning of the chapter do indicate that the whole purpose of the book is to highlight the truthfulness of some of the stereotypes British people have about the Froggies. The very title of the book is meant to refer to the filth we might find everywhere in France.
HOMEWORK
