How to Spot a Fake Photo: Tips for AI Detectives
When you look at a photo online, how do you know if it is real or made by a computer (AI)? Use this simple checklist to find the truth!
1. Look Closely at the Hands 🖐️
Computers find hands very difficult to draw!
- The Test: Count the fingers. Are there five?
- Look for: Extra fingers, missing fingers, or fingers that look like long, weird sausages.
2. Check the Background Blur 🌫️
Often, AI photos focus only on the person and make everything else blurry to hide mistakes.
- The Test: Look at the objects behind the person (buildings, trees, cars).
- Look for: Straight lines (like windows or poles) that look bent, wavy, or melt into the background.
3. Study the Eyes and Glasses 👓
Eyes are the window to the soul, but they are also a giveaway for fake photos.
- The Test: Look at the pupils (the black circles in the middle of the eyes) and the ears.
- Look for: Pupils that are not perfect circles, or glasses that don't match. Sometimes one side of the glasses has a different shape, or the frame disappears into the skin.
4. Search for "Floating" Objects 🎈
Sometimes AI forgets how gravity works.
- The Test: Look at accessories like earrings, hats, bags, or cups.
- Look for: An earring that is floating next to the ear but not actually attached to it, or a cup that doesn't quite touch the person's hand.
5. Check the Skin and Teeth 🦷
AI loves to make people look perfect—sometimes too perfect.
- The Test: Look at the texture of the skin and the shape of the teeth.
- Look for: Skin that looks like plastic or a doll (no pores, no freckles, no tiny lines). Look at the teeth: do they look like one giant white block, or are there too many teeth in their mouth?
6. Do a "Reverse Image Search" 🔍
If you are still not sure, use technology to help you!
- The Test: Upload the photo to Google Images or tineye.com.
- Look for: Where did the photo come from? If the photo only appears on social media (like X or TikTok) and not on news websites, it is probably fake.
💡 Classroom Tip: You can print these 6 tips out as a "Detective Bookmark" or a small poster for students to keep on their desks during photo-description activities!
