STEP 3 EXTRA MATERIAL READ THE FOLLOWING LIST OF ARGUMENTS AND CHOOSE YOUR FAVOURITE  TO ANSWER THE QUESTION : WILL YOU VOTE AT THE NEXT ELECTION ?

WILL YOU VOTE AT THE NEXT ELECTIONS?

  • . Voting is like speaking.  It's the process of turning our thoughts and dreams of how the world should be into skin and bones.

·       if we don’t vote, we have no right to complain about the way things are.

·       because I want to see changes in the country, in my city.  I want to know that the country in which I live has the right priorities and is taking action to serve its people, especially those who are normally forgotten about

·       To select someone who will take measures that correspond to your views on matters

·       Make a political choice

·       Select a leader

·       Voice your say in the way the country is run

·       Select someone who will be up to the job

·       Because it legitimises someone’s power

·       Because it is the way a democracy works as opposed to a dictatorship.

·       Because in many countries people do not have the chance to express their views. Not  using your right to vote would be like treason, like letting them down.

·       We must be thankful we have the opportunity to vote.

·       To see your ideals taking shape

·       It is a moral obligation

STEP 4 BUT AT WHAT AGE ? DEBATE WITH YOUR FRIENDS

SHOULD WE LOWER THE VOTING AGE ?: THE PROS and CONS

The pros

The cons

·       not a major difference with someone aged 18

·        to be involved = to be commited ( impliqué)

·       an arbitrary age

·        be allowed to drive

·        be allowed to work

·        increase the amount of voter turnout = the number of people to vote

·       a civic engagement

·        be already the case in some countries

·        lack the maturity

·       the influence of the media

·        change view easily

·        be unpredictable

·        need time to form their own opinion

·        borrow ( emprunter) from their parents’ or teachers’ ideas

·        do harm =  do damage
